Time for Me to Detox My Home

For quite some time now I’ve heard many talk about detoxing their homes but never investigated as to the what or how questions. I understood why…to make sure we bring in less toxic substances to our homes and make for a cleaner environment to live in.

One of my daughters, for the longest time, has used essential oils and other recipes on her body, such as lip balms, deodorants, facial and foot scrubs, to name a few. Being intolerable to many ingredients found in products and food, she’s had to come up with other solutions in order not to get sick. I’ve always been amazed and proud of all of her accomplishments to make her home a better environment to live in.

But she’s not the only daughter who is using essential oils to make sure her house is as chemical free as possible. My eldest is another mentor to me, helping me understand not only what the various essential oils can do, or how to mix and match them, but also the business side of joining Young Living.

I’m new to essential oils and these posts will be my journey and journal as I investigate and study various essential oils and recipes I’ll come upon to share.

But first, let me explain how ‘toxin’ was explained to me. It’s a component/chemical that can have dire/harmful consequences to our body. These have the potential to make many of us sick, those that don’t have a high tolerance to some of these components. For instance, skin irritations can be one side effect by toxins found in some cleaning products because they are absorbed into our skin. For the longest time now, I had to stop using cleaning products because my hands would break out as though I had eczema, red, broken, and a burning, itchy sensation. Although these didn’t make me ‘sick’ in the sense some might think, these were times where my tough nature helped me surpass the uncomfortableness because I had no choice. I had to clean, and having been raised in the old fashioned way of using certain cleaning brands, I naturally followed that path.

But no more.

My Journey

I knew of the benefits of the aloe plant and tea tree oil and began using them for small things like cuts, burns, blisters, cold sores. In the past, a cold sore would last for about 5 days. After I dapped a bit of tea tree oil with the first indication a cold sore was going to spring forth, within two days (for me, at least. Might not be the same for anyone else) the beginnings of that cold sore was lessened. Then my husband began using the tea tree oil and his cold sores were less obvious in just a few short days.

My children had given me the perfect gift for my 60th birthday in January 2018, something I kept talking about to them that I wanted to try. They purchased the Young Living kit with 11 essential oils, a diffuser (and yes, I’ve been using it every day since they presented it to me), and several other items.

The first thing I did was to search for a cleaning recipe using the essential oils found in my kit.

Reusable Cloth Wipes

Here’s a recipe for Disinfecting Wipes, and the best part, they are reusable.

  • 1 wide mouth mason jar (mine is 750ml)
  • thin washcloths (I cut up two big fiber dishcloths to make four smaller cloths)
  • 1/2 cup distilled white vinegar (something every home has)
  • 3/4 cup distilled water
  • 12 drops of Thieves Essential Oil
  • 6 drops of Lemon Essential Oil
  • 2 drops of Lavender (optional)

Fold in half, roll, then place the cloths in the jar, close the lid, then turn the jar upside down a few times to make sure they get soaked by the solution.

Now, whenever you want to do a major clean up of counters, walls, even mirrors/glass, you rinse the rag back into the jar, use, then simply rinse the rag in warm water and place back into the jar.

Store in a dark place (cupboard) to maintain oil properties.

When I clean the mirrors/patio doors I always carry a paper towel to wipe clean. No streaks or smudges remain. Even the counters continue to smell nice after an hour and no stickiness.

What I also did as a precautionary measure is a test wipe on material like wooden tables to make sure it doesn’t leave a stain. I’d advise doing this.
